Macro_Loop

This loop allows the leader to shift roles dynamically, adjusting their level of involvement based on the needs of the story and the players’ abilities. It ensures a balance between guiding the story and empowering players to shape their own narrative paths.

This loop focuses on how the leader shifts between stepping in front of or behind the narrative, depending on the players’ experience and the leader’s goals. It provides a flexible structure where the leader can actively direct the story when needed or step back to allow players to shape the narrative through their choices. The balance ensures that the story moves forward while respecting player agency and fostering collaboration.

A Core Principle:
While the leader shapes most aspects of the frame and events, the player character’s (PC’s) free will is sacred. Players always control their character’s decisions, thoughts, and motivations. The leader can present challenges, guide the pacing, and establish consequences, but must never override the PC’s autonomy.

Invitation

The leader invites the player into the narrative by presenting a scene, event, or situation that requires engagement. This is achieved by describing the PC’s surroundings, their sensations, or something unfolding in the world around them.

Purpose: To immerse the player in their character’s perspective and draw them into the story.

Leader’s Role: The leader may step forward to guide the narrative or step back to allow players to take the initiative.

Pre-Stance

The leader adopts a stance to determine how players engage with the presented situation.

Before: The leader takes an active role, framing a challenge or conflict that demands a response, often ending with a prompt like, “What do you do?”

Behind: The leader steps back, encouraging the player to act independently based on their character’s focus.

To Micro Loop

Following the Pre-Stance, the story often transitions into a Micro Loop where specific actions and decisions are resolved. This may involve mechanics like dice rolls.

Consequence

The leader introduces the results of the player’s actions, integrating them into the story and ensuring the narrative world responds credibly.

Role: To create tangible impacts that reflect player decisions and maintain story coherence.

Variability: The nature and scope of consequences depend on the player’s choices and the context of the situation.
